St. Bernard’s High School has successfully secured its future with an unprecedented $10.3 million endowment campaign. Just five years ago, St. Bernard’s became an independent institution, transitioning management of the school from the Diocese of Worcester to an independent Board of Trustees. The path ahead seemed daunting, filled with financial obstacles that threatened the very existence of the school. “It was a labor of love to save the school from closure,” Board of Trustees Chairman John Zarrella remarked, reflecting on this remarkable journey. “We could never have predicted that through hard work and perseverance, an anonymous donor would come forward with such an extraordinary challenge opportunity.”
The challenge was clear: to raise $2 million by June 30, 2025, in order to secure a three-to-one match gift of $6 million from this generous anonymous benefactor. The St. Bernard’s community rose to the occasion, embodying the Bernardian spirit of camaraderie and determination. The community not only met the initial goal but exceeded it, raising an impressive $2.3 million. The donor, deeply moved by the community's commitment, extended their match to 100% of the funds raised, rounding it up to a monumental $7 million. In a further act of generosity, the donor made an additional $1 million gift to the endowment, bringing their total contribution to $8 million. Combined with the community’s efforts, St. Bernard’s High School now boasts a $10.3 million endowment fund.
This monumental achievement marks not only a financial victory but also serves as a testament to the power of unity and belief in a common cause. “This fund will guarantee long-term financial sustainability, supporting student programs, faculty, financial aid, and facilities,” Zarrella stated. “We cannot thank our anonymous donor and our community enough for securing the future of St. Bernard’s High School.” This endowment represents a historic moment for St. Bernard’s, ensuring a bright and prosperous future for generations to come. The story of its resilience will be shared for years to come, reminding everyone that when a community stands united, great things can be achieved. Our future is not just bright; it is secure, filled with inspiring possibilities and an unwavering commitment to education.
